Marie arrives with her demi-lancer company on a commission for the King's Army to patrol the outlying countryside of the provinces. Ordinarily it's not a task she'd take up voluntarily, but the knight is also fleeing a Glassmoor blood feud resulting from the slaying of her sister's abusive husband in an honor duel. To her delight one of the first 'locals' she runs into is her old Army pal Will Alexston, lately Prince Alexston. Seeing the new title, domestic life and confinement to the castle walls has wore on him, the Dame takes him on one of her first patrols - partly to get the poor bastard out of the house, and partly to catch up and bullshit.
Dame Ardounne meets a fellow woman of violence who quickly takes her fancy - Maud Scarfell, countess of the Fell Isles and professional torturer. Arrangements are made to take the Scarfell on a patrol circuit to show the Lancers a few Cinn-hunting tricks and get the lay of the land. Wine leads to flirtation leads to the pair creating quite a racket in Marie's field tent, and the night is spent in Maud's accomodations in the castle. Luckily few are there to see the soldier's coming and going other than trusted Scarfell retainers.
